Congratulations to Troop 58 for winning First Place at the Cumberland County Fair for their display in the Exhibition Hall. Hopefully many of you will have the opportunity to check out their handiwork. Special thanks to Andrew and Patrick Bowden, Alex Cameron, Tony Cleveland, Scott Higgins, Mike Kemna and Sam Kern for the time spent planning and setting up the display. Good work, guys!
We have quite a full month, even though we won't be meeting one Monday - Columbus Day - No School, No Scouts!
Monday, October 4th - Town Forest - 6:00 PM (Please note earlier time).
We will meet at the Cumberland Town Forest, parking at the Cumberland Town Office building, and walk through the paths to remove obstructions and inventory the repair work that needs to be done. Bring a flashlight and a pair of work gloves! Also, we'll do final planning in the parking lot for the Fall Camporee following this inspection.
Monday, October 11th - Columbus Day - No School, No Scouts
Friday, Sunday, October 15th - 17th - Casco Bay District Fall Camporee
Theme: Mountain Men
Location: Camp Hinds, Raymond
There is a sign up sheet for this event at our meetings that includes a list of events. Check with anyone who attended the Spring Camporee - we had a lot of fun even with hot, and then rainy weather. And we've heard that this Camporee will include Tomahawk throwing. Check our 'Calendar of Events' above for links to more information.
Monday, October 18th Meeting, Wescustogo Hall, 6:30 - 8:00 PM
Merit Badge Roundtable and Advancement Night
This was so successful at September 20th's meeting that the Scouts have decided to do it again. It's good to see progress on all those merit badges! Popcorn orders are due at this meeting. The final decisions for a November 6th Backpacking Overnight Trip needs to be completed by this meeting so the group can plan for the trip.
Sunday, October 24th Meeting, Wescustogo Hall, 6:30 - 8:00 PM
Patrol Leaders Council /Adult Committee Meetings to plan for November's Scouting meetings and events. The Patrol Leadership will meet at 5:30 for planning with the Scoutmaster. The adult meeting begins at 7:00 and usually runs for an hour or so. All Scouts are encouraged to join their leadership in planning the upcoming month. All parents and interested adults are encouraged to attend the follow up planning meeting.
Monday, October 25th - Court of Honor and Pot Luck Supper
at Wescustogo Hall, 6:00 - 8:00 PM (Please note earlier time)
These suppers start half an hour earlier than usual to allow time for dinner and conversation as well as awarding earned merit badges and ranks. Families are cordially invited. Please bring an entrée or dessert to share with everyone.
We will also have our Parent Meeting this evening to give all Scout parents the opportunity to learn more about our year. We have found that those Scouts who remain the most committed to the program tend to be the ones with committed parents. And it's a great opportunity to bond with your own son and his friends!
A new feature has been added to our website (www.troop58bsa.org) called a message board. This gives us an additional way to share information. Please feel free to explore and use this new feature. Also, don't forget to occasionally check our 'Calendar' for links to additional information.
Upcoming Events in the Scout Year
November 6 - Hike and Camping Trip
The plan is to hike into a camp site, carrying all needed equipment (cooking gear, tents, sleeping bags, clothing, food, etc.), camp overnight, and hike out in the morning. This is a change to our usual drive-up camping experience.
November 6 - Scouting for Food Collection Day
Anyone not attending the Hike and Camping Trip is invited to help stock the Scouting for Food collection at the Congregational Church's food pantry. Helping with this counts toward service hours.
December 11 - 12 - Zealand Falls trip
January 7 - 9 - Cadigan Lodge
We have reserved Cadigan Lodge at Camp Hinds to have our own Winter Fun Weekend. We are planning to include ice fishing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, sleeping outside (Polar Bear Camp Out) and any other winter activities that seem of interest. The Lodge is heated, with enough space for the entire troop.
February 5 - Klondike Derby
February 12 - Snow Tubing at Camden Snow Bowl
We're going to try to do this again - with luck, we'll have the proper amount of snow this year, and it won't be too cold to spend some time in it!
March 5 - 6 - Carter Notch trip
April 22 - 24 - Acadia Trip
May 13 - 15 - Overnight canoe trip - details TBD.
May 20 - 23 - Casco Bay District Spring Camporee - details to follow.
June - White Water Rafting, earlier in the month this year (before school ends)
Maybe a sea kayaking trip to an island in Casco Bay . . .
