Campout went well. 7 in attendance (5 boys, Yum and I). Two beautiful, clear days. Bright moon. Crusty snow made travel difficult, but we did hike to the top of Albany Mt. There's still 6-12" of snow around there. Great views from the ledges around the summit. Dave and Dan did well providing us with food (chili with kielbasa, peach cobbler, Ham & eggs for breakfast). There was plenty. After a round of hot drinks Matt C. mentioned a sign he had seen about not drinking the pond water. It turns out that the F&W dept. tainted the water with Rotenone to control non-native fish in the pond. From there we had to melt two-week old snow (which had plenty of floaties). Such a shame. We worked hard to chop a hole through 10-11" of ice and the pond water was crystal clear. Jokes and stories around the campfire. From what we could see at various points along the river, it looked canoeable, but there's not an abundance of water. At the take out, we saw a group and asked about the water level. They said it was "just enough". According the USGS the flow was 350cfs yesterday. Ref: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/me/nwis/uv?01038000 We'll need to keep an eye on the water levels, and, if the flow is below 350cfs on May 11, we probably should select an alternate trip. The plan is to hike from Monson, ME to the Kennebec River at Caratunk, ME (about 35 miles) We need to figure out: - Trip roster - Food - Transportation - Equipment list. This section is a moderate hike with only two significant peaks to climb. Pleasant Pond Mt (2477 ft) and Moxie Bald Mt (2630 ft) are both open peaks with outstanding 360° views of the surrounding land. The 5 or 6 mile walk along the Piscataquis River is particularly nice with the river running through gorges of black Monson slate. If you would like to go on this trip, please make every effort to attend. A trip roster of 7 or 8 (including adults) is best. For a shelter-to-shelter mileage chart of this trip, see: http://www.thebackpacker.com/trails/at_list.php?state=ME&location_start=Monson%2C+Maine&mile_direction_start=From+Katahdin&search_distance=35&search_direction=S&location_end=Caratunk%2C+Maine&mile_direction_end=From+Katahdin (you may need to copy/paste to re-assemble this string as a single line into the address box of your browser). Brad will email Matt Chabot and Chris Lockman to determine if they're still interested. Are you available? If not, is Chris L. eligible as leader? (21, registered w/PTC, etc.) Food: We need 3 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 3 suppers. We decided to assign a breakfast team, lunch team and a supper team. Nate-breakfast, Tyler-lunch, Brad-supper. Each meal team captain will select an assistant when roster is solidified. For meeting on 6/18, each will have a meal plan with contingencies for feasibility/compatibility with cooking gear (We don't want to repeat the situation on Mahoosucs trip where two skillets were required for pancake breakfast on day one and were not required for subsequent meals). Transportation: Yum and Hanna are willing to provide car shuttle services. If they can find a third driver, they can move cars with one pass. Gear: Pack check at brief meeting on 6/25. I think some of the kids (e.g. Brad, Josh) may be exempt from a rigorous pack check, but Nate and Tyler have never been on a 4-day hike before. At 6/18 meeting we'll review gear requirements so that kids can prepare for pack check. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Eagle Project: Work on Nate's trail building project at Bradbury Mt is scheduled for 8:30 to 3:00 this Saturday and Sunday [June 8-9].
