Ceremonies will be held at the parking lot of the Cumberland Town Hall, near the ball fields. Refreshments will be served. The self-guided nature trail hugs the perimeter of the 100-acre forest, and includes 16 numbered stops with descriptions of various aspects of forest ecology and management. Illustrated brochures depicting the features of each site are available at the large kiosk at the entrance to the trail near the ball fields. The trail is being named for Ernest A. Rand, a forester and long-time resident of Cumberland who was instrumental in the development and care of the forest during the 1930's. The Town of Cumberland acquired the property in 1891 through the will of Elizabeth I. Drowne, with the stipulation that benefits derived from the property were to be used for educational purposes. The forest continues to be used as a recreation spot, a game refuge, and outdoor laboratory. Current management of the forest is intended to provide an interesting educational and recreational resource for local citizens, and is conveniently located within walking distance of several schools. Take a quick break on Father's Day. Bring Dad along for a fun walk through the woods to enjoy this hidden secret of our neighborhood. Bring hiking shoes or boots, some sections of the trail may be slightly wet. For more information, contact the Town Forest Board Chairman Walt Dunlap at 829-4200 or Vice Chair Sally Stockwell at 829-3201. ================================================= kiosk at the entrance to the trail near the ball fields.
